As I go through my contacts on LinkedIn, I notice a number of them using a cropped wedding photo as their LinkedIn profile photo. I suppose the thinking behind this is the fact that we all think that we looked our best during our wedding day. Fair enough. However, the treatment of a wedding photographer and a corporate headshot photographer is very different from each other. Since we do both, allow me to explain it further.
The wedding photographer approaches wedding portraits with an artistic slant to it. The lighting, the expression and the posing are meant to create an image that may seem unnatural but classy at the same time - showing off the formal nature of the occasion. The headshot photographer, on the other hand, captures the natural expression of the person (this is a must!) as it is meant to showcase his or her personality when doing business. Hence, using one's wedding photo for LinkedIn is not advisable as it is obviously approached in a different manner for an entirely different purpose. The approach of both photographers is worlds apart.
We have below an example of a LinkedIn profile photo using a wedding image. Our client decided to exchange his wedding photo for a more professional and engaging headshot to be used for his LinkedIn photo. Both of us were happy he made that decision.
